Building New Positive Habits

SHARE & COMMENT

positive1Have you analyzed your health status recently? Where on your priority list does it currently rank?

Truth is, the more we focus on and analyze our values and priorities, the easier it is for us to modify them and elevate their status giving them the importance they deserve.

This is a golden opportunity to get to the core of your personal health, fitness and weight issues but it will take some effort on your part as you begin shifting away from your old ingrained patterns of behavior that no longer serve you (everything that is part of your old values system) to more positive life enhancing habits.

Begin by using a pen and writing the answers to the following questions down on a piece of paper. This needs to be a personal exercise so it’s best not to use a keyboard to record this information.

Question 1:

How important is it to you to be able to go through life in a feel-good lean firm body? The goal of this exercise is to make us aware of what is truly important to us. We go through the motions daily, habitually but not really consciously aware. Write down all the things in your life that you currently place value on such as family, friends, career, and leisure activities and so on.

This exercise opens the door to reality and brings us face to face with what elements of our lives currently hold priority over others.

List them in order from 1-10 making 10 the highest priority and 1 representing the lowest (the ones you have trouble decided whether or not they should even be included on your list).

Take your list and write it out again in order from highest to lowest priority so the list begins with highest priority at the top, then second highest follows that and so on.

Your list needs to reflect your daily ACTIONS: Observe yourself and study your daily actions. Those tell you exactly where you priorities are right now. If you ranked “eating healthy” in the number 3 position but you don’t spend any of your “active” time (you are taking no actions steps) making sure you do eat healthy it is simply not realistic. You must change the order and priority of the item and move it where it makes sense. Your daily action steps reveal your priorities…you just need to be honest with yourself.

Once your list is complete, study where you have listed your health or weight loss goals. Are they ranked high enough for you to be taking action on them? If not, what do you need to shift to allow your health and fitness goals to be at the top of your list?

When we stop and take time to examine our daily lives we discover what activities are eating our precious time away that are not important. Activities such as too much TV or Internet, video games or even chatting online, texting, going out too much or mindless shopping to kill time.

Your personal itemized list has the power to give your important feedback so you can intelligently make any necessary changes you need in order to increase your motivation levels.

Question 2:

What is it going to take for you to make the necessary changes in your life?

It’s not wise to wait until a health crisis occurs before you seriously take the necessary steps to take better care of yourself. You need to pay attention to early warning signs, things like excess “belly fat” that is stubborn to remove can be early warning signals to you that your health isn’t what it should be.

Are you paying attention to your body or are you waiting for potentially irreversible or even fatal consequences to show up before you decide to make your health a priority?

No one wants to hear it because it makes us responsible…but the truth is

“…your health is the most important thing in your life and without it nothing else matters. Nothing.”

The last question that needs to be addressed is:

Are you ready to make your health a priority? Are you ready on a deep down level to make the changes you know you need to make while you still have time to do so? Once again you need to answer honestly.

This exercise is worth your time because it exposes the basis of your current life value system according to the actions you take day to day. You are likely not even aware of that you have valued some very inconsequential actions such as watching TV for a few hours daily over the status of your health…you could be exercising.

You cannot address your incongruity unless you are first aware of it and following through with this writing exercise brings you front and center with them so that you can address and change them.

If you are overweight and unhealthy it is because your lifestyle allows it, you continually eat the wrong foods and too much of them or you have not made any time on your schedule for proper exercise.

Remember, these fragile new actions are what you are building into your new positive habits. These actions soon become who you are as opposed to just something you do. Continually remind yourself during your weight loss journey why your health is now such a high priority.
