SMART GOALS

  • Smart goals are:
  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

SMART goals is an acronym for the 5 steps of specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based goals and one of the most effective tools used by many high achievers to reach their goals realistically and consistently.

Learning how to use SMART goals can make the difference between failure and achievement.

Here’s how to apply the principles of SMART goal setting:

  1. Make your goal focused and well-defined. A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. Your goal must answer the 6 “W” questions: Who, What, When, Where, Which and Why. The more specific you are, the more you can find ways of reaching your target.

Some of the questions you could as are:

  • Who is involved?
  • What do I want to accomplish?
  • Where will this happen? Identify your location
  • When will this happen? Establishing a time frame
  • Which requirements and restraints will be part of the process? Identify them
  • Why am I setting this goal? Jot down specific reason and benefits of accomplishing this goal.

There is a distinct difference between setting a specific goal in contrast to a vague goal. Saying “I want to lose weight” is a vague goal whereas stating “I want to lose 20 pounds.” Is specific and measurable which helps to keep you motivated and pushing forward.

  1. Put concrete numbers in your goals to know if you’re are falling behind or staying on track. Ask yourself how much, how many and how ill I know when it is accomplished? What’s waiting at the finish line?

Keep a journal and put up a whiteboard at the office and you can also employ use of your smartphone with a downloadable tracking app.

  1. Make the goal attainable. An unrealistic goal will do nothing but frustrate your goals and bring on failure. Base your goals on your present restrictions such as schedule, workload and knowledge. You must be able to believe that you can realistically attain this goal.

You can ask yourself questions like:

  • Are you prepared to make the commitment to reach your target?
  • Are you willing to dramatically alter or at least tweak aspects of your life?
  • Is there a more achievable target you are willing to work for?
  1. Ground the goal within a timeframe. SMART goals need to be time-bound with a deadline that needs to be adhered to for completion. This helps to reinforce the seriousness of the goal and motivates you to take action. Without a timeline, there is no internal pressure to accomplish the goal and it too easily gets put on the back burner.

Within your established time frame, ask yourself:

  • What can I do today to reach my goal?
  • What can I do 3 weeks from now to reach my goal?
  • What can I do 3 months from now to reach my goal?

Setting SMART goals is no guarantee that you will experience failure or setbacks. However, it does give you something concrete that you can work towards. It will increase your chances of being successful. And, that’s a good thing.
