The Many Benefits of HIIT Workouts

HIIT-JumpropeLack of time is no excuse for sporting a body that is obviously sedentary and out of shape these days. Excellent scientific research is proving that you can perform significantly shorter workouts at greater intensity and get better results than the usual time consuming “cardio” type routines.

Called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), these short bursts of all out exercise involve alternating between very intense bouts of exercise and low intensity exercise. As an example you could sprint for 30 seconds followed by 90 seconds of walking, continue to repeat 30 seconds sprinting, 90 seconds walking. HIIT can be used both aerobically with cardio or anaerobically using weights.

The important thing to remember with HIIT workouts is that the emphasis must be on the “all out” bit when you are performing the high-intensity activity which should range between 15-30 seconds. Really give it your all during the last few seconds of the interval before your rest perioid.

Continue to repeat this cycle for a total of eight repetitions which include a three minute warm-up and two minute cool-down. The total time invested is a mere 20 minutes as opposed to traditional much longer static type “cardio” sessions and you are really only exerting yourself for four minutes.

A few of the benefits that High Intensity Interval Training offer include:

  • Super efficiency: HIIT is ideal for those with busy schedules. You can even do a complete workout during your lunch break.
  • Increased oxygen intake.
  • Burns fat quicker: You’ll burn more calories during your HIIT workout which kicks your body’s repair cycle into hyper-drive and you’ll continue to burn fat and calories for 24 hours after your HIIT workout…more than you would after a steady run. More fat and calories burned is always a sweet bonus.
  • Equipment free workouts: Truly a no cost workout, HIIT requires no equipment to get it done. Anything plyometric works well to get your heart rate up fast. You can however also perform HIIT with simple pieces of equipment like jump ropes or bikes.
  • The world is your gym: You can easily perform HIIT exercises anywhere you find yourself because the concept is so simple; short period of maximum effort followed by a slightly longer period of recovery time. Repeat.
  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity: Glucose is more readily absorbed by your muscles rather than landing as fat stores.
  • Anabolic effect: High Intensity Interval training combined with consumption of slightly more calories than burned will create an anabolic effect in the body which helps to put on muscle as opposed to steady state cardio which when performed for long durations is catabolic. Steady state cardio encourages muscle loss while HIIT workouts ensure that dieters lose weight from their fat stores while preserving their hard-earned muscles.
  • Increased ability to handle Lactate acid buildup in the muscles.
  • Metabolic boost: HIIT stimulates production of the human growth hormone HGH for up to 450 % during the first 24 hours post workout. HGH is responsible for increased caloric burn but it also slows down the aging process and that can never be a bad thing!

High Intensity Interval Training demands attention and intensity…you will be working hard the whole time you are performing. Proper HIIT workouts will prevent your body from adapting and getting comfortable with any particular workout.

There are many different ways to approach HIIT, however the key element to remember that makes HIIT different from other forms of interval training is that the high intensity intervals require maximum effort.

Performing at least 1-2 sessions of this type of interval work-out training each week really helps to get you to your goal of improved health and weight loss. Understand though that because HIIT’s approach to cardio exercise is very demanding it is not for everyone.
